Samuel Büchel

In the world of emergency response, every second can make a difference. Speed, coordination, and technology are key elements in saving lives. The story of Samuel Büchel, an active member of the Oberriet fire service and head of the First Responder unit, shows how innovation and personal commitment can significantly improve operational effectiveness on the ground.

A commitment rooted in the community

Samuel Büchel operates in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley, where he is actively involved with the Oberriet fire service. Within the organization, he serves as a First Responder — a role he carries out with strong dedication.

His motivation comes from being directly involved from the very beginning:

“I had the opportunity to help build this unit.”

In addition to being part of the team, he is also its leader. This dual role allows him to contribute both operationally and strategically to the development of the service.

From building the unit to optimizing missions

The First Responder project in Oberriet was launched in August 2023. From the start, a key question emerged: how can missions become even faster and more efficient?

The answer came with the introduction of Momentum in January 2024.

The objective is clear: improve the alert system and optimize resource allocation across the area.

“We asked ourselves how we could become more efficient and where there was room for improvement in the alerting phase.”

Thanks to Momentum, available responders can be identified through geolocation and the closest ones can be dispatched immediately.

When technology saves a life

Among the most impactful missions, Samuel recalls a particularly meaningful case that highlights the value of an efficient system.

Thanks to real-time geolocation, the two closest First Responders were dispatched immediately. The outcome was decisive:

  • arrival on scene in under four minutes

  • first defibrillation shock delivered quickly

  • second shock after reassessment

  • restoration of the patient’s circulation

An intervention with the best possible outcome.

“It’s always a joy to see this person around the village and know they are doing well.”

A coordinated and dynamic system

The introduction of Momentum has significantly improved dispatch management.

The system enables:

  • real-time geolocation of available First Responders

  • automatic dispatch of the two closest responders

  • visibility in the mobile app of who is already on a mission

  • coordination of follow-up teams

While the first responders act directly on scene, other team members head to the station to retrieve the defibrillator and medical equipment, then proceed to the incident with the command vehicle.

This approach ensures a scalable and well-organized response.

Integrate, not replace

Despite technological innovation, traditional channels remain in place.

First Responders are still alerted via phone and pager, but Momentum represents a critical enhancement to overall efficiency.

“We were convinced we could do better.”

Motivation: making a difference in your free time

At the core of Samuel’s commitment is a simple yet powerful motivation:

“I can use my free time in a meaningful way.”

Being a First Responder means intervening in critical situations — often before professional rescuers arrive.

And above all, it means saving lives.

The key function: knowing who is closest

Among all features, one stands out as essential: geolocation of operational teams.

Analyzing responder positions in real time drastically reduces response time and increases survival rates in critical cases.

“We can respond as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

Technology and people: a winning combination

Samuel Büchel’s story clearly shows that effective emergency response is not only about technology, but about the combination of innovative tools and committed people.

On one side, systems like Momentum optimize processes.

On the other, it is the dedication, passion, and availability of First Responders that truly make the difference.

Together, they create a system capable of acting fast — and, in some cases, changing the course of a life.
